Art needlework packs

Art needlework packs produced by Penelope for H M Forces.

'Penelope' Art needlework packs

Given the restrictions on trade and limited resources, these art packs were sold exclusively for H M Forces for one shilling. Each kit contained a guide, cotton threads, needles, and material to finish. Moreover, there is a letter from Wm (William) Briggs hoping that the receiver enjoys the needlework pack which are designed to 'foster a love of beautiful things, and the satisfaction which arises from the practice of personal skill'. This message is reiterated in the designs which are focused on symbolic designs such as regimental badges and buildings or nature and the landscape.

Art as therapy

Alongside the recreational benefits, these art needlework packs served as a therapeutic practice, especially for those in hospital or stationed in isolated places. Crucial benefits such as co-ordination, focus, and purpose were witnessed in soldiers injured in the First World War or suffering from PTSD. From this, it is clear why the Board of Trade recognised needlework's importance by providing 'Penelope' packets a licence despite the trade restrictions.
