Brass apostle spoon, with stamp inside bowl and a knop of the figure of St. Matthew holding a money bag, c.1600.
Brass apostle spoon
Tudor or Stuart, around 1600
This spoon is called an apostle spoon because the knop (handle end) depicts a figure of St Matthew holding a money bag. Spoons were often given as christening gifts and the money bag is seemingly a reference to St Matthew's job of tax collector.
