' On a large slab 103x41 ins.on the floor of the transept against the NE walls in the angle. The church is a large cruciform church, decorated windows of great beauty. The brass depicts a crusader in full armour and clad underneath in chain armour, legs crossed, feet resting on his helmet. There is missing an inscription round the edge (?is it stone worn) at the top across above the head should be two small coats of arms. Beneath the feet a matrix for inscription/ The rector, Rev.C.Randolph, writes 'The brass you mention is of Sir R Septvans (about 1296). It is one of the best and earliest in England, the other two being at Stoke Dammerel and Trumpington. You will find it mentioned in Archaelogia Cartiana and any work on English brasses' (Source: Herbert Druitt's Catalogue of Brass Rubbings)
