Brown and Yellow Slab Vase by Tony Lattimer

Brown and Yellow Slab Vase by Tony Lattimer, mid-20th Century

Slab vase, brown and yellow glazed slab vase with a daisy printed into one side. Made by Tony Lattimer at Chawton Forge, Alton, Hampshire, 1970s. Manufactured under the brand 'English Hedgerow Pottery'.Tony Lattimer worked in Chawton and lived Four Marks at this time. He now predominantly works out of his studio in West Penwith, Cornwall.

A vase such as this is constructed out of one large flat piece of clay which is then cut down to appropriate sizes. The sides of the vase, or slabs, are then pressed together by hand without the aid of other other tools such as a potter's wheel. Slab technique can be an easy way to create uniformity across similar pieces so it lends itself to larger scale production.
