Charter pictorial souvenir collections, 9 October 1936.

Charter pictorial souvenir of celebrations, The Eastleigh weekly news published 9 October 1936.

The charter of incorporation was granted by King Edward VII and was presented on his behalf by Lord Mount Temple, Deputy Lieutenant for the County on 3 October 1936. This charter made the urban district, Eastleigh, a municipal borough. Each municipal borough consists of a mayor, alderman (part of the municipal council), and burgesses (inhabitants of a town or borough). Collectively, this formed a type of local government involved in local administrative and legal responsibilities such as the creation of bye-laws, infrastructure and  civil and criminal law courts. This newspaper shows the individuals who are forming this local government and their positions. In 1974, Eastleigh Borough Council was expanded to include seven additional parishes from the Winchester rural district.

The newspaper shows an image of six officials being:

  • Councillor Edward J. Bradshaw - The Charter Mayor of the Borough of Eastleigh
  • R. Reynolds Garrett - Medical officer of health
  • Mrs. E. J. Bradshaw - The Charter Mayoress of the Borough of Eastleigh
  • F. G. Lee - Engineer and surveyor
  • F. W. Cuthbertson - Town Clerk
  • A. M. Cousins - Treasurer
