Chinese porcelain coffee cup

Early 18th century

Found during excavations by Winchester Museums Service Archaeology Section in a field just east of Wickham Square (opposite St Nicholas Church) in the mid- to late 1970s

This cup has on it the design known as the 'squatting Chinaman' and was one of a group of Chinese porcelain tablewares found in the backfill of a cess pit on the site of Wickham Manor House. By the early 18th century, Chinese potters were making designs adapted to western tastes, for regular export to Britain through the East India Company.
