Verica became king of the Atrebates and Regni, two tribes inhabiting the Hampshire-Berkshire-Sussex region, around AD10. He was deposed by a neighbouring king, Epaticcus, and fled to Rome. It was his appeal for Roman military assistance that prompted the Emperor Claudius to invade Britain in AD43. The obverse of the coin shows the head of Apollo in celticized, ie abstract, form and the reverse a celticized horse.
