Silver penny of Aethelstan
Anglo-Saxon, AD925-940
The increasing power of Wessex is witnessed by mints at Norwich, Nottingham, Shrewsbury and Warwick and by Aethelstan striking coins as far north as York after driving out the Norse king. The obverse of this coin bears the inscription +AETHELSTAN.REX.TO.BRIT (Aethelstan Rex Totius Britanniae - 'King of all Britain'). The reverse legend shows it to have been struck by the moneyer Eadstan at the Winchester mint - +EADSTAN.MO.WIN.CIVIT.
