Silver shilling of Charles II

Stuart, issued in 1677

The last hammered coins were struck in 1662. Henceforth all coins were milled. The dies for the milled money in all metals were made by Jan Roettier, a native of Antwerp, and the striking of the coins were entrusted to Peter Blondeau, who used the mill and screw for this purpose. This example bears the obverse legend CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA - Charles II by the Grace of God - and his titles MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX - King of Great Britain, France and Ireland - on the reverse along with the date. The edge is milled.
