This engraved print depicts a view of East Cowes, specifically from Newport Road. In the central foreground, there is a farmer herding some sheep and a couple of cows alongside his dog. In the background, there are some houses and buildings along with some boats on the Medina River. The engraving was made by John Shury and Sons, and it was based on a line drawing by George Shepherd.   

George Shepherd (1784-1862), also known as George Sidney Shepherd, was a topographical, architectural and landscape painter. He was one of the founding members of the New Society of Painters in watercolours 1831. This establishment still exists as the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours which has helped train prominent artists such as Sir John Tenniel, Henry Charles Brewer and Julia Sorrel.
