Eastleigh Hospital Carnival, 1933

An official programme for Eastleigh Hospital Carnival, 1933, by Eastleigh Printing Works.

The carnival was a way to raise funds for the 'Hospital fund' which used the money for the benefit of the local community. The 1933 carnival took place from Saturday 9 September to Sunday 17 September ending with a massed church parade. During the carnival, there was a variety of events from a boxing tournament to children's ball and a drinking competition. These events aim to let people enjoy themselves while they contribute to a good cause with the tag line: 'Help the hospitals and help yourself'. Alongside a summary of events and advertisements, the programme also served as a dual role as a raffle ticket to win a prize. Moreover, the editorial article makes it clear that hospitals need more money than is being provided through the vital but inadequate Contributory Schemes. Ultimately, this fund was used until the introduction of the National Health Service which provided the services free of charge.

This object was audited and researched as part of the National Lottery Data Hunters and Story Gatherers project.
