Festival of Britain Programme, 1951

Programmes for the Festival of Britain, History of Basingstoke pageant, 14-16 June 1951.

The seal depicts the combat of St. Michael the Archangel standing upon a dragon with the words: 'SIGILLUM CO'E VILLE DE BASINGSTOKE' meaning the common seal of the Town of Basingstoke. The programmes are for the pageant taking place on 14-16 June taking place at Basingstoke War Memorial Park. This pageant was designed to demonstrate the history of Basingstoke in 12 scenes starting from the Roman Road at Worting to the present day marking key events such as: Henry III granting Basingstoke a charter in 1256A.D., the introduction of the railway, and the first motor car. These pageants were created to inform local people, generate a sense of pride, and raise the spirits of the disheartened populace who were still struggling from the impact of the Second World War. In total, there were between 500-600 performers during this large three day pageant.

These objects were audited and researched as part of the NLHF Data Hunters and Story Gatherers.
