The programme is part one of the Festival of Empire pageant covering pre-history to Edward III, containing 26 pages of text, illustrations, and advertisements. The cover page reflects this period through the jousting knight. The 1911 Festival of Empire was the largest event taking place at the Crystal Palace in London opened to celebrate the coronation of King George V. The festival had a range of exhibitions that aimed to highlight the multitude of dominion countries in the Empire and promote emigration to those nations. Through emigration, the destination country would have more British born people making its relationship with Britain stronger and solve key issues such as unemployment and overcrowding. The pageant itself was organised by Frank Lescelles who would organise the 1912 coronation Durbar in Calcutta and the 1924 Pageant of Empire at Wembley earning his reputation as 'the man who staged empire'.
