Medieval, early 14th century
Found on the site of Hyde Abbey, Winchester, Hampshire
This glazed inlaid tile fragment depicts a griffin, a mythical beast with the head, fore-part and wings of an eagle, and the body, hind-legs and tail of a lion. The end of the tail is visible top right. Heraldic beasts are common designs on medieval tiles. This particular design is widespread in South Hampshire, and can be found on tiles in Winchester College.
