Head of a colour standard (possibly a glaive) of a regiment of horse, flat iron head with a socket, dug up on the field of the Battle of Cheriton of 1644, found with a sword and a pike.
Head of a colour standard
Stuart, 1644
Found on Cheriton Battlefield, Hampshire
This would formerly have been mounted on the end of a pole and used to display a colour standard for the rallying of troops, much like a flag.
The Battle of Cheriton was an important battle in the English Civil War and saw a Parliamentarian victory over the Royalist army in Hampshire. However, the Royalist strongholds of Winchester Castle and Basing House did not fall until 1645.
