Hoard of seven silver siliquae

Roman, AD323-AD367

Found, using a metal detector, in the Winchester area

These seven coins are all Roman fourth century 'siliquae'. The earliest dates to the reign of Constantius II (AD323-361) while the latest belong to the reigns of Valentinian I and Valens, which suggests that the hoard was buried shortly after AD367. The hoard was, perhaps, a ritual deposition in a sacred landscape. Other coin hoards, mainly of coins of 1st century BC to 2nd century AD date, are known from the same area.
