Horse Harness Pendant

A Medieval copper alloy horse harness pendant

An incomplete Medieval copper alloy horse harness pendant 13th-14th century. The harness is corroded, comprising of an elaborate quatrefoil outer frame with a worn suspension-loop at the apex, also with the interstices of the quatrefoil frame each containing a projecting fillet. A slot in the base of the suspension-loop contains a separate copper alloy pin (which is missing) with swinging quatrefoil pendant. This pendant would of been gold gilded with some of that gilding still surviving on the front of the pendant in trace amounts. When hung from the horse harness this pendant would of swung back and forth within itself with the center piece most likely making a clinking noise when swinging, drawing more attention to the horse and its riders status.

This horse harness pendant was unearthed by a metal detectorist around the Winchester area.
