Jetton

Medieval, late 13th to 14th centuries

Found in the 1970s during excavations by Winchester Museums Archaeology Section at Victoria Road, Winchester, Hampshire

Like other jettons found at Hyde, this copper-alloy disc looks like a coin, but was used for counting on a board. It was issued by the Peruzzi of Florence, a powerful banking family in late 13th and 14th century Italy. Decorative motifs of pears and leaves are seen on both sides.
