Jetton, foreign, issued by Dauphine, at France, 1400 to 1499.
Brass reckoning counter, or jetton
French, late 14th - early 15th century
The obverse depicts a dolphin ('dauphin') the traditional badge of the Counts of Alban, Dauphins of Viennois. After 1349 the eldest son of the French king took the title Dauphin. Jettons with the dolphin on the obverse can thus be dated later than 1349. The inscription reads LE NOBLE ET FIER PO[ISSON] - 'Noble and proud fish'.
