Jug, white earthenware, 'The Royal Patriotic Jug', decorated with prints designed by George Eyre showing a grieving widow and children and casualties on a battlefield, produced in aid of the Royal Patriotic Fund for the Crimean War; base, an elaborate printed trophy of arms incorporating title, makers' and designer's names, registered design mark with encoded date of 27th December 1854 and a nominal issue date of 1st January 1855, made by Samuel Alcock and Co, Hill Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, 1854+
Old label reads; Teapot; hand-thrown and lathe-turned with roulette applied borders; the deep cream colour with crazed yellow glaze is early and unlike the Staffordshire and Yorkshire wares. Although double interwined rope handles were made at Leeds and diamond moulding was used in various forms by other factories, the spout moulded with bamboo and reversed acanthus leaves and two unique pairs of sunflower and strawberry and quadruple twig terminals confirm its so-called "Melbourne", Derbyshire character. The firing cracks and clay pads, left "unfettled", (not removed with a pointed tool) show how the sprigs were taken from the moulds and applied after the handle had been luted-on prior to the biscuit firing and decoration. The glaze has been ground off the footring and the painting, in oxides of iron and manganese, imitates the early Work of Rhodes and Robinson, Leeds. Probably made at Cockpit Hill, Derby, 1765.
