Large copper alloy stud, decorative structural fitting from context 6010, Evans Halshaw site, Hyde Street, Winchester (WINCM:AY 35). Possibly Roman?
Large copper-alloy stud
Roman or medieval
Found in the early 2000's by Wessex Archaeology at the Evans Halshaw site, Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire
Probably used, with others, as part of decorative studwork on a large piece of furniture or even the wooden elements of a building, this object is of uncertain date. The suburb of Hyde in Roman times was occupied by a large cemetery, and houses built along to the roads that led to Silchester to the north east, and Cirencester to the north west. Was the stud from a building that predated the Abbey by about 900 years, or was it part of the Abbey's structure?
