Letter from Cardinal from John Henry Newman to Reverend William Durst

Letter from Cardinal from John Henry Newman to Reverend William Durst

On Sunday 13th October the Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman was cannonised - but you may not be aware that he had a connection with Alton although he later wrote:

'I wish no reference to be made, in any Memoir of me, to my or my family’s residence there, which took place at that time'

John Henry Newman

This letter was written by John Henry himself to Canon Durst of Alton in 1877. In it he said:

'I was born, and lived in London till I got my fellowship at Oriel. Sixty years ago during a portion of my undergraduate career I was at Alton for the vacations. ... I never knew the place in any other way, but I have a pleasant recollection of beautiful walks and rides about it, and of the fine hop gardens.'

John Henry Newman
