Iron Age Loomweight from Winklebury
Excavations in Winklebury took place in the mid-1970s, following planning applications for Fort Hill School finding evidence of occupation during both the Early and the Late Iron Age. This loom weight indicates a thriving community that was producing, and possibly trading, cloth and clothing.
The photograph below shows the quern stone, loomweight, and pot sherd in the Basingstoke's My Home exhibition (November 2024-March 2025) celebrating immigration in Basingstoke throughout time.
This object was audited and researched as part of the Heritage Fund Data Hunters and Story Gatherers project.
