Lord Meight - William Simpson Teddy Bear Collection

Lord Meight - William Simpson Teddy Bear Collection

This teddy bear was named Lord Meight and belonged to Mr William Simpson, an avid collector of more than 250 teddy bears. He wears a red velvet cloak with a white fur edge and a crown made out of card.

Lord Meight is part of a family of teddy bears consisting of Tino, Tilly, Rupert, Nicholas, Nicola, Roberta, and Lady Sidonie. He was purchased in 1962 in Marshall and Snelgroves in London. Mr Simpson notes that he 'was  originally part of their window display and they needed a certain amount of persuasion to part with him'. Lord Meight was made by the English manufacturer Farnell and bears a label indicating this. The name 'Meight' was derived from the phrase "Wotcher Mate!", by which the bear was frequently addressed.
