Mash Stirrer from Hobb's Brewery, c.1880

Mash Stirrer from Hobb's Brewery of Gosport, c.1880

A mash stirrer from Hobb's Brewery of Stoke Road in Gosport. Mash stirrers were used to stir the malt and hot water within a tub as part of the beer making process. Malt is made by germinating and then drying barley grain. The starch inside the barley is then converted into sugar which in turn is then converted into alcohol by yeast.

This particular stirrer was used at Hobb's Brewery in Gosport who operated several pubs in the Gosport and Portsmouth area from the mid  19th century in 1913. In 1913 Hobbs & Co. was sold off to Portsmouth United Breweries.
