Medieval tuning key found in Crondall

Medieval copper alloy key with drooping foliate terminals, a central diamond-shaped knop and a single wide collar. Below the collar is a tapering hollow box intended for tightening a key. A number of keys of similar form have been found (cf Egan 1998, no. 747) and an interpretation as tuning keys for musical instruments has been persuasively suggested.

This key was found in Crondall, Hampshire.
