Mount

A gilded copper alloy square mount of Medieval date

A cast copper alloy square gilded mount dating to the Medieval period, c.1150's-1450. The decoration is a cross, square dotted design, with a 16 petaled pattern around the edge of the square. The integral rivet on the reverse side, which is sub-rectangular in shape, has been misshapen and there is a minuscule amount of gilding. Mounts were predominantly used for decoration, most likely on a horse harness/bridle but they were also displayed on belts as well.

This mount was unearthed by a metal detectorist around the Winchester area.
