trade token die stamp

Stuart, 1669

A die used for the striking of Winchester Corporation halfpenny trade tokens. This is the obverse side and is engraved with the arms of the City of Winchester and CW.

Local authorities and traders issued tokens between 1649 and 1672 to boost the supply of small change as the lower denominations of the regal coinage, of gold and silver only, were so scarce.

The photograph of this object shows the die face and the reverse image which appeared on the token side by side
