Token die stamp

Stuart, 1669

A die used for the striking of Winchester Corporation halfpenny trade tokens. This is the reverse side and is engraved with A WINCHESTER HALF PENNY 1669.

Local authorities and traders issued tokens between 1649 and 1672 to boost the supply of small change as the lower denominations of the regal coinage, of gold and silver only, were so scarce.

The photograph of this object shows the die face and the reverse image which appeared on the token side by side
