Taken in 1934

Winchester's swimming pool was formally opened on a beautiful summer's afternoon by the Mayor, Councillor F M Newton accompanied by the Mayoress, most of the Corporation and leading citizens. The Band of the Rifle Brigade played, tea was served, and a swimming display was put on by swimmers from Southampton.

The pool opened daily from 9 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. except on Sundays when there were three sessions, with two closures around the times of morning and evening church services. Adults were charged one shilling and children sixpence. The adult rate was reduced to nine pence on Thursdays, but with an eye to demand charges were doubled on Bank Holidays.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer F B Heathcote Wride.
