Photograph of Bighton Wood House, Bighton

Taken about 1870

Bighton Wood House at Bighton, near Alresford, was built for the Reverend J T Maine in 1844 at a cost of £10,000, replacing the old manor house which was subsequently occupied by a farmer. Part of the surrounding woodland was transformed into extensive pleasure grounds to complement the house. Reverend Maine was still in residence in the late 1860s and it may be that the ladies here are part of his family.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
