Photograph of Cheriton rectory, Cheriton

Taken about 1865-75

This late seventeenth to early eighteenth century rectory with its hipped roof and raised brick quoins reflects the past prosperity of the living of Cheriton - at one time it had the third highest stipend in the diocese. Conservatories, of which this is a fine example, were popular with the Victorians in an era when plant hunters were bringing back exotic species from abroad, and frequently feature in photographs.

The figures are thought to be the rector, the Reverend Henry Hubbard, and his wife.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
