Photograph of Chernocke Place, Southgate Street, Winchester

Taken about 1870

Chernocke Place was built in the 1840s as a development of eight houses in two blocks, one of which is seen here. The exterior shows the Italianate Classical influence with a small portico to each entrance and pediments above the first floor windows, while inside decoration was in the Egyptian style.

The architect was Owen Browne Carter (1806-59) whose work in Winchester included the Corn Exchange, the County Savings Bank and the Grand Jury Chamber adjoining the Great Hall. He was the leading Winchester architect of the mid-nineteenth century, and the more widely known G E Street was an articled pupil in his practice in 1841-2. Carter was also a highly respected artist-draughtsman, many of whose drawings were lithographed.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
