Photograph of the Church of the Holy Cross, Durley

Taken about 1870

This image is of especial interest as it was taken before restoration work in 1879 and 1884 which significantly altered Durley's early fourteenth century church. The then rector's proposal to remove some of the tombstones, which apparently caused much disagreement in the village, also changed the appearance of the churchyard.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
