Photograph of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Cheriton

Taken about 1870

Cheriton lies about six miles east of Winchester. The Church of St Michael and All Angels was founded in the twelfth century, but is primarily a thirteenth century building with later alterations. Major restoration work was necessary in the mid-eighteenth century when a fire caused widespread damage with little more than the walls left standing; the tower was faced with brick and flint work at about this time. The railings around the tombs in the churchyard were removed to help the war effort in the Second World War.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
