Photograph of the courtyard of The George Hotel, 94 High Street, Winchester

Taken in 1879

The George was one of six hotels in Winchester at this time. It was bounded by the High Street, Jewry Street and St George's Street, the open courtyard space seen here reflecting its earlier role as a coaching inn. This view looks north from the High Street end towards St George's Street; a member of staff stands in a doorway and three men enjoy the sunshine in the courtyard. As well as being known as a venue for celebrations the hotel hosted auctions and performances by the Volunteer Dramatics Society in the later nineteenth century. It was demolished in 1956.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer Williamn Savage (1817-87)and is found in an album entitled 'Winchester Views of Old Buildings'.
