Photograph of the dining room at The Grange, Northington

Taken in 1871

This richly decorated dining room at The Grange, Northington was situated in an extension to the main house which was added for Alexander Baring in the mid 1820s; the architect was Charles Cockerell. The inspiration was Classical, with columns against the walls based on the Temple of Apollo at Bassae and a beautifully decorated ceiling. The fireplace was by the highly regarded J Flaxman.

The furnishings in this splendid country house are also of interest - note the reflection on the table top.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
