Photograph of estate workers at The Grange, Northington

Taken in August 1870

Over fifty men are gathered for this group photograph of the estate workers at The Grange, reflecting the dedication of Alexander Hugh Baring, 4th Lord Ashburton to improving the estate he had inherited in 1868. He established a new carpenters' shop, woodyard and forges to facilitate the work of maintaining fences and driveways, lodges and cottages, and also added to the range of farm buildings.

Behind the group is the iron and glass conservatory which had been constructed in 1824 for Alexander Baring by Jones and Clark, Metallic Hothouse Manufacturers from Birmingham. It had a Greek portico, beneath which was built a tank to collect rainwater to supply the house.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
