Photograph of Francis and Frederick Baring at The Grange, Northington

Taken in 1871

Francis and Frederick were the sons of the 4th Lord Ashburton and his wife, Lady Leonora Caroline of The Grange, Northington. Francis, on the right, who would have been about six years old when the photograph was taken, became the 5th Lord Ashburton on the death of his father in 1889. The pose is relatively informal for a Victorian photograph.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
