Photograph of the terraced gardens at The Grange, Northington

Taken about 1870

The Barings were keenly interested in the gardens and parkland as well as the house in their ownership at The Grange. Alexander Baring, a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society, had the terraced gardens laid out with fountains and balustrades in the mid 1820s. He also established many tree plantations, and the avenue of lime trees and the lake in the park (which was constructed in the previous century) were well known.

This photograph shows the formal pattern of gardening in the later nineteenth century with the parkland beyond. The small figure may be Alexander Hugh Baring, 4th Lord Ashburton, who held the title from 1868 to 1889.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
