Photograph of the Doric portico at The Grange, Northington

Taken about 1890

The early nineteenth century saw a wave of enthusiasm for Greek Classical architecture. The young Henry Drummond, owner of The Grange at Northington, returned from his Grand Tour in 1804 eager to build on his newly inherited estate in the latest fashion. His architect, William Wilkins, who had himself spent two years in Greece and Asia Minor, produced a house design like a Greek temple with the magnificent ornamental Doric portico partly seen here which ran across the entire east end of the building. It was constructed in Roman cement with detailed work in stone.

The estate was purchased by the Baring family, and about the time of this photograph was inherited by Francis Denzil Edward whose father, Alexander Hugh Baring, 4th Lord Ashburton, died in 1889.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
