Photograph of members of the Pern family of Crawley

Taken about 1870

The Perns were important landowners and farmers in the parish of Crawley to the north-west of Winchester, having built up their landholdings over a century or so to more than 1,000 acres by 1851. This image may include George Pern and his wife Louisa, who were the last of the family to farm in Crawley. A small summerhouse is distinguishable behind the group. Croquet was an extremely popular pastime in Victorian times.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
