Photograph of the High Street, Winchester decorated for the Rifle Brigade

Taken in 1874

The view looks south-west up the High Street from the Jewry Street junction, with Southgate Street and The Black Swan to the left. The large arch embellished with flags which spans the High Street forms part of the festivities to welcome the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade back from the Gold Coast of West Africa where it had been fighting in the Ashanti War, and is an indication of how intertwined were the lives of the military and the city. The motto 'Manners Makyth Man' is associated with Winchester College.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
