Photograph of an interior at Bighton Wood House, Bighton

Taken about 1870

Bighton Wood House was the home of the Reverend J T Maine and was built in the early 1840s. Nineteenth century domestic interiors are relatively rare, and this image provides a wealth of detail about Victorian furnishings, in particular the patterns of the carpets, curtains and chair coverings. The cornice, chandelier and mirror in the further room are also worthy of note.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
