Photograph of the Jewry, Southgate, High Street junction, Winchester

Taken about 1875

The photograph looks south-west up the High Street from the junction with Jewry Street. The nineteenth century Black Swan Hotel, which features prominently, replaced a much older inn, and was itself demolished in 1935 although the name is preserved in the Black Swan Buildings on this corner. Note the black swan over the hotel entrance as well as the various figures and the road surface. Edward Corfe, whose shop front is in the foreground, was a tailor and woollen draper.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Winchester Views of Modern Buildings'.

See WILLAM SAVAGE for further details of his life and work.
