Photograph of Avington Park, Avington

Taken about 1880

Avington Park is situated beside the River Itchen between Winchester and Alresford. The extensive parkland has a large lake which was formed when the estate was owned by the 3rd Duke of Chandos in the eighteenth century. It was a favourite seat of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, but was sold to John Shelley in the 1840s and was owned by his family well into the following century. Note the boathouse to the right in the photograph.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
