Photograph of the library at The Grange, Northington

Taken in 1871

This photograph shows another fine interior at The Grange, Northington and the Classical influence can again be seen, for example in the fireplace and the ceiling shown reflected in the mirror.

The library would have been an especially important room in the mid-1800s. William Bingham Baring, 2nd Lord Ashburton was very interested in science and the arts and his wife, Lady Harriet, entertained a wide circle of artistic and literary friends, among them Thomas Carlyle, Lord Tennyson and William Thackeray.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
