Photograph of Micheldever School, Micheldever

Taken in 1873

Attempts were made by various organisations and individuals to improve the educational provision for poorer children in the nineteenth century. Micheldever School was built in 1845 at a cost of £160, thanks to the generosity of the Lord of the Manor, Sir Thomas Baring of Stratton Park. Children are gathered informally along the length of the lane in front of the school.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
