Original sepia print of Mr and Mrs Giles H Pointer, c. 1865
Photograph of Mr and Mrs Giles Pointer
Taken about 1865
This is a studio portrait of Winchester's affluent middle class; Mr Pointer and his first wife were members of one of the city's major brewing families who occupied premises in Cheesehill (now Chesil) Street from 1852 to 1895.
Giles Henry Pointer was a leading light in Winchester Amateur Dramatics Society - which seems to be reflected in his confident theatrical stance. His wife wears an eye-catching dress with a full skirted crinoline which was fashionable in the early and mid 1860s.
The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Winchester Worthies'.
