Photograph of Otterbourne House, Otterbourne
Taken about 1870
Otterbourne lies about four miles south-west of Winchester. For much of the nineteenth century Otterbourne House was inhabited by members of the Yonge family. William Crawley Yonge and his wife lived there after their marriage in 1822 and the house was inherited by their son Julian, whose home it was at the time of this photograph.
Julian's older sister was Charlotte Yonge, a prolific authoress. She made a major contribution to the life of the village as Sunday School teacher and benefactress of the church which her father had been instrumental in building - he collaborated on its design with the Winchester architect O B Carter.
The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
